Musshy Uncle's 'Out of the Box Solution' for Kashmir, in his book 'In the Line of Fire', is quite interesting and worth a read. He suggests self-governance or self-rule in certain identified conflict regions of Kashmir and a joint mechanism with a membership of Pakistanis, Indians and Kashmiris overseeing the self-governance. This school of thought itself is proof enough of Musharraf's intention of supporting the cause for an independent Kashmir region. His suggestion for a partial stepping back in the 'International Diplomacy' chapter seems to benefit Pakistan more than India and does not hold any water. It is a known fact that most of the Kashmir regions under dispute are heavily occupied and run by armed religious fundamentalist militant groups and if given greater autonomy then in the course of time would slowly grow into a mini-Pakistan and would become another force to reckon with for the Indians. Musharraf's 'out of the box' solution for Kashmir is an absolute lose-lose situation for India and it is in our best interest kept 'out-of-the-box'.
That said, Musharraf is a very patriotic person rather than a ‘dangerously’ religious zealot. IMHO, it would be easier to deal with Musharraf, a soldier, than with a democratically elected politician of today. The Kargil war however was one of the biggest miscalculations that Musaharraf did, much similar to Al-Queda's miscalculation of defeating the US in Afghanistan as they did to the Soviet's mighty red army. Surprisingly even after being defeated fair and square during the Kargil war the plan for which, which according to scholar Hassan Abbas, was first drawn up during the regime of General Mohammad Zia-ul-Haq which was rejected by the dictator but General Musharraf took the big risk and eventually lost....but surprisingly Musharraf makes it clear in his book that he infact won the Kargil war and sees Kargil as a triumph. Either this dude suffers from insomnia or he is highly optimistic, both equally dangerous.
