Emergency in Pakistan!

Rewind : Earlier this year Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Sunday cautioned the judiciary against overreaching while Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan asserted that judicial review was essential for democracy. Wonderful statement by the CJ!!

Fast forward : On Saturday Gen. Musharaff declares a state of Emergency, Mushy has lost no time in cracking down on all voices of dissent. The Constitution stands suspended while the media and judiciary have been gagged. Also the elections, scheduled for January are delayed. Reason give by Musharaff are...ahem...

• ..there is visible ascendancy in the activities of extremists and incidents of terrorist attacks, including suicide bombings, IED explosions, rocket firing and bomb explosions and the banding together of some militant groups have taken such activities to an unprecedented level of violent intensity posing a grave threat to the life and property of the citizens of Pakistan. -- Isn't this one of the USP of Pakistan? Without all these Pakistan would be like an Ekta Kapoor serial without a saas.
